In a significant gesture, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited the Dham to offer prayers and participate in the rituals. While he performed a ceremonial puja, the first puja of the season was notably conducted in the name of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Earlier in the morning, Maa Ganga’s traditional palanquin procession arrived at the temple, creating a festive atmosphere as crowds of devotees joined in celebration.
Yamunotri Dham Also Reopens
Shortly after the events at Gangotri, the Yamunotri Dham also opened its doors to pilgrims. Located at an altitude of 3,293 metres in the Garhwal Himalayas, the shrine dedicated to Goddess Yamuna welcomed both domestic and international devotees. The temple will remain open until late October, depending on weather conditions.
With the opening of these two Dhams, preparations are now underway for the ceremonial openings of Kedarnath and Badrinath, which are scheduled in the coming days. The full Char Dham Yatra will then be in full swing.
A Six-Month Spiritual Journey
The Char Dham Yatra is one of the most sacred pilgrimages in Hinduism, encompassing the temples of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. Thousands of pilgrims trek through the treacherous yet scenic Himalayan terrain to offer prayers at these holy sites.
This year, the Uttarakhand government has placed strong emphasis on safety, online registration, and infrastructure enhancements to manage the high footfall of devotees.
As the 2025 Char Dham Yatra begins with devotion and grandeur, spiritual fervour is once again palpable in the Himalayan valleys. With clear skies and ideal weather conditions, the sacred yatra is expected to witness record participation this year.
