What — and who — helps us stick to our New Year’s goals

Here we are in 2026, 明けましておめでとうございます (akemashite omedetō gozaimasu, Happy New Year)! It’s 午年 (umadoshi, the Year of the Horse), and specifically, 丙午 (hinoeuma, the fire horse), which is said to be the peak of fire energy in the 60-year zodiac cycle.
Have you made your 抱負 (hōfu, resolutions) yet? According to a 2025 poll conducted by language-learning platform Preply, the most popular 抱負 last year were 健康的なライフスタイルを送る (kenkō-tekina raifusutairu o okuru, to live a healthy lifestyle), followed by 経済的安定 (keizai-teki antei, financial stability) and 整理整頓 (seiriseiton, decluttering and organizing).
「今年こそは運動する習慣をつけたい」と考えている人も多いのではないでしょうか (“Kotoshi koso wa undō suru shūkan o tsuketai” to kangaete iru hito mo ōi no dewa nai deshō ka, I’m sure there are many people thinking, “This year, I want to get into the habit of exercising”).
