'Macross' creator Shoji Kawamori breaks free with new film 'Labyrinth'

Shoji Kawamori has built up an impressive resume since he started his career in the anime industry while still in his teens.
Now a director, writer and mechanical designer, Kawamori co-created the 1982 classic series "Super Dimension Fortress Macross" and helmed many of its sequels and spinoffs. He also masterminded other well-regarded series like "The Vision of Escaflowne" and "Earth Maiden Arjuna" and provided designs for films, series and games including "Ghost in the Shell," "Eureka Seven" and "Armored Core." He even produced a mixed-reality-based pavilion for last year's Osaka Expo.
But one goal has always eluded him — until now.
