Sightings
I was in the Marines during the Iraq war from 2005-2009. I spent over 15 months split between 2 deployments. I was located in a small hamlet north of Fallujah in 2005 in an area called Kharma. We did patrols around Nasir Wa Salem and Zaidon. We mostly did foot but sometimes we did vehicle patrols.
When I was there we did a lot of night patrols- which I preferred- I had a false sense of security. This sentiment was strengthened by looking through my nods. Our NVGs in 2005 were the old 7B double eye into a single monocle vision. It distorts your perception because you lose your ability to have depth. You would see other Marines aimlessly sticking their arms out in front of them trying to knock branches of grasses out of the way that were not there or feet away- a strange feeling. Any rate- the NVGs amplify ambient light so stars and lights look neon green whereas the landscape has this dark green color mixed with blacks.
I was in a LPOP (listening post observation post) and had been in position for some time and we had 50% down. I saw what initially I thought was a satellite. Same MO at first moving in a distinct path across the sky. This looked almost like any other star- extremely bright- unnoticeable though to the naked eye if you took off your nods. I followed it and for maybe what would be a half arc from right to left of viewable horizon so like half across the sky when it stopped. I thought I lost it because it blended into the other stars I could see ( if you took off your nods there were still millions of stars but even the faintest ones stood out.) then this light moved down ward or south from moving towards the horizon. At this point the speed was consistent with before. It then accelerated enough to notice. It again stopped closer to the horizon- at this point maybe 2 fingers above the horizon with arms stretched out. It then sped up to unknown speeds and went left, right and back across what would be visually like arms outstretched but in reality thousands or more miles. It then got really intensely bright and accelerated into a flash out of the viewable range.
This all was about 3 minutes.
I have no idea what it was but it moved like no known aircraft I have ever seen or know about.
