As part of my initiative to showcase the diversity of local brands, I invite you to discover La Canadienne, a footwear brand made right here in Montreal and designed for our winters, whose trademark City Dry will keep your feet dry. Their tagline: “consciously made for life in the city”.

La Canadienne by Nicholas Niro, President.
How did your brand come about and how would you describe it in a few words? La Canadienne was born in 1987 after decades of shoemaking in Montreal under private labels for other brands; the founder, Penny Shuster, developed a collection under the name La Canadienne. The objective was to create a collection that was comfortable, functional yet also fashionable for all four seasons. We have a lot of technical features in our products. All of the components are italian. We benefit from centuries of shoemaking in Italy, but made here in Montréal, we are made in the heart of the city, for the city. We are also the opposite of disposable fashion in a way, because our footwear lasts in time and in style. That’s the positioning going forward, we are “consciously made for life in the city”. The reason we use the word conscious is because we have a fair made supply chain and we have a commitment to quality that lasts in time and style. So it’s consciously made in terms of the supply chain, but also consciously made for life in the city.
Tell me about your creative process? The designs are led by our founder Penny Schuster who is the creative director. Obviously we are influenced by the major fashion trends, but even if those inspire our designs, we are always interpreting them our way. It’s always a minimalist and sophisticated design and we are always looking to make our designs timeless but always on trend.
We are inspired by women in the city, and Canadian winters. We are also guided by the expert craftsmanship of Italian shoe design. Our iconic City Dry collection is designed for life in the city, made for lunch plans and surprise forecasts.
What inspired your new collection? The key highlight of the Fall-Winter20 collection is the launch of this registered trademark City Dry, which refers to our waterproof boots and booties. City Dry really reflects everything that we are at La Canadienne, the waterproof suede and leather is made for life in the city, made to keep your feet dry and breathable.
Thick soled boots are a trend this fall, but these styles are usually heavy. We found ways to inject this trend into our collection, but using light weight rubber soles for comfort and lasting wear.
What are your influences at the moment? In Montréal, we sometimes experience four seasons in a day, and I think that’s what we always have in the mind; keeping our feet dry but always looking good no matter the weather (but that of course translates to any major city across North America and Europe). Our major influences are a timeless esthetic; there is a special tie with italian design at La Canadienne given the history with the founders.
What is your signature piece? I think one style that we’re always very proud of is the Myranda, it’s fashion and function. It is made of waterproof suede, with an extra light sole. It is day to night in terms of style because it has a heel but on a platform, so the bootie does not feel too high. It’s everything in one shoe, it has been part of our iconic collection for years. It perfectly syncs with the Montréal weather, nine months of the year. You know, when our customers put this on they just love it. I think that one shoe is the highlight to reflect our brand’s DNA.
This being said, a personal favourite with the team is the Abba. It is the boot for everyone. It has a shearling collar, a front zip, and a lug sole. It reflects who we are because it is unique, it is on-trend with the shearling, but has all our comfort aspects.
Who is the woman that best represents your brand? The La Canadienne Woman is sophisticated, she invests in timeless pieces that elevate her looks, she is smart and grounded and with understated flair. She is looking for minimalist and sophisticated styling but always rich in quality and texture.
How are you coping with COVID? We certainly appreciate our local production, which has helped us in terms of logistics during the lockdown. In terms of our product assortment, we genuinely feel that our boots are perfect for the life that people are going through right now; we are home, and we are going for those daily walks to get out and our footwear makes you feel elevated in style but it’s comfortable.
Although the past few months have certainly been a challenging time for many, it has also provided an opportunity for brands to take a step back and check-in on their positioning & messaging. It’s a time to focus on what you do best, staying true to your identity as a brand. It reminds us how proud we are to be born & raised in Montréal, the city that has and continues to be our inspiration. Now more than ever, we are proud to make a product that is lasting for the mindful consumer of today.
