About a month ago, a story from the Greely Tribune hit my Google alerts and caught my eye for a couple of reasons. One, it was from my home state (Colorado). Two, it was about monsters. Specifically, ones invading Denver (my hometown) at a new Distortions Monster World exhibit.

Yeah, that was something I had to investigate further. Here’s what I found out.

What is Distortions Monster World?

Immersive experiences, a monster of a good time.

Distortions Monster World is not just an exhibit. It’s a new museum exhibiting spooky props, masks, and more in Denver, Colorado, that’s located in the Denver Pavilions on 16th Street, downtown.

Here’s the description that greets you when you visit their site:

Ready to get up-close and personal with the things that go bump in the night?!

Welcome to Distortions Monster World, where surprises (and monsters!) meet you at every corner and open doors lead you on an out-of-this-world interactive adventure.

A series of cinematic environments featuring immersive installations and infamous creatures and characters – many you’ll recognize from music, film, T.V., and your favorite haunted attractions – will truly transport you to another place!

Distortions Unlimited has been making monsters for movies and haunted attractions for over 50 years. This museum gives you the chance to learn about this “unique art form” as “the sets, sights, and sounds take you away to a supernatural world where giants roam, kings rule, and… you never know what’s around the corner.”

You can also study the “life-sized ghouls, zombies, snarling gargoyles, creatures of the night, and more” up close (including touching them!). You’re also welcome to take selfies with them —if you dare.

It’s a place that invites you to “ignite your imagination and challenge your perception of what makes a monster in this technologically-advanced and interactive art installation.”

It kind of reminds me a bit of Austin’s Museum of the Weird. At least the horror movie exhibit and wax museum parts of it. It also looks like the kind of place I could get my haunted house (of the Halloween variety) fix without having to freak out about people jumping out at, or chasing, me.

Tickets

Tickets can be purchased online for timed entry. Ages 12+ cost $25, 5-11 cost $18, and ages 4 and under are free.

It’s open Monday through Saturday from 11 am until 8 pm, and on Sundays from 12 pm to 6 pm.
