US (or any) ecologists, how beneficial will this current large winter storm system be for things like watersheds, aquifers, etc. in the near future?
Depends on the condition of the wet land. Illinois got a lot of snow, but all our wetlands are tiled, piped, and canaled.
So the water flows fast through the creeks and rivers during melt. Instead of running down slow meandering creeks and absorbing into the land, it goes to the Mississippi.
Obviously a generalization but I just like to point out that Illinois has drained 90% of its wetlands. It also used to have malaria when there were wetlands.
