Japan pledges to boost its investment in the United States to an unprecedented $1 trillion, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba announced during recent high-level talks with US officials.

This massive commitment aims to strengthen defense technologies, particularly in artificial intelligence systems. Alex Karp, CEO of data analytics firm Palantir, emphasized the urgent need for Japan and the US to accelerate their partnerships on AI defense systems.

He suggested a strategic division of labor where Japan provides hardware while American companies deliver software infrastructure that makes AI valuable. “If I were in charge of Japan, I would build an AI targeting system with the United States that was co-managed,” Karp stated.

His comments followed Chinese startup DeepSeek‘s claim about matching American AI models at significantly lower costs. Karp described this development as a “wake-up call” that will likely spur more AI investment in America.

The two nations already work on concrete projects through the Defense Innovation Unit and Japan’s Ministry of Defense. Their joint prize challenge focuses on biodefense solutions and AI-driven command and control systems. This collaboration will culminate in a hybrid pitch event in Tokyo this March.

Starting this year, the Japanese and US governments will also initiate collaborative research on cyber attacks that leverage artificial intelligence. This partnership combines America’s defense technology expertise with Japan‘s data on attacks specific to non-English-speaking countries.

Japan Expands Investment in Next-Gen Chips

Japan has additionally allocated ¥1.05 trillion ($7 billion) for next-generation chip and quantum computing research. This funding forms part of Prime Minister Ishiba’s broader ¥10 trillion pledge to strengthen semiconductor and artificial intelligence development by 2030.

The alliance extends beyond technology to include military readiness. Japan committed to doubling its defense spending by 2027. Both countries agreed to enhance their defense capabilities through joint training exercises and expanded bilateral security cooperation in cyberspace.

This comprehensive investment strategy positions Japan as the world’s largest investor in the US for five consecutive years. The partnership aims to maintain technological superiority while strengthening economic ties between the two democratic allies.
