TN CM Stalin steps up attack on Centre, announces high-level panel on state autonomy

CHENNAI: More than a decade after the PV Rajamannar Committee was established by then Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to examine Centre-State relations, his son and current Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin, on Tuesday announced the formation of a new high-level committee. This committee, headed by retired Supreme Court judge Kurien Joseph, will study the constitutional and legal provisions impacting the relationship between the Centre and the States.
The committee, which will also include retired IAS officer Ashok Vardhan Shetty and former vice chairman of the State Planning Commission Professor M Naganathan, will suggest ways to restore subjects transferred from the State List to the Concurrent List and recommend how States could function with greater autonomy.
"The committee will study, as per the law, to transfer those subjects that went from the State List to the Concurrent List," the Chief Minister said and pointed out that the National Eligibility-cum- Entrance Test (NEET)was out of the purview of states.
Announcing the formation of the committee under Rule 110 in the State Assembly, the Chief Minister said the committee will submit its interim report by January 2026 and final report in two years. The Chief Minister also pointed out that this move is not just for Tamil Nadu but for all States, to protect the principle of unity in diversity.
