Doubting her character, UP woman kills teen daughter, buries body in backyard

A court in Uttar Pradesh ordered a life imprisonment sentence to a woman convicted of murdering her 14-year-old daughter due to suspicion over her character. Along with the murder, the court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict.
The crime unfolded in April 2020 when a man reported that his 14-year-old cousin had been missing for several days. He said that the girl’s father, a labourer working outside the village, was also unaware of her whereabouts. Following an intensive investigation, the police uncovered the girl’s body on 4 May 2020, buried in the backyard of her own home. The exhumation was conducted under the supervision of a magistrate.

After recovering the victim's body, police rigorously questioned the girl's mother where she confessed to killing her daughter due to suspicions regarding her character and buried the body to conceal the crime. The subsequent post-mortem examination also confirmed the cause of death to be murder.
As the case proceeded, police filed a charge sheet. "The mother suspected her minor daughter’s character, which led to this tragic act," said the prosecution lawyer.
The prolonged trial saw three judges preside over the case, more than 50 hearings, and the presentation of seven witnesses by the prosecution. The convicted mother has remained in custody since the incident was reported.
