The Battle of Liberty Place - September 14, 1874, effectively brought an end of Reconstruction policies in Louisiana
Reconstruction is a sadly overlooked era in American history. I understand, to a certain extent, as it's a complex and ultimately saddening time, but at the same time the Reconstruction Amendments laid the foundation for what would eventually bloom in the form of the Civil Rights movement. There were definitely opportunities lost but it's hard to hold a war weary nation accountable for wanting to just bury their dead and move on.
I highly recommend Eric Foner's books on the subject. I recently finished reading "The Second Founding" and Foner does a masterful job of capturing the deep political divisions of the time and the impossible choices the nation found itself facing.
