Samuel Leroux & Alexandre Desabrais, Founders of Solios.
How did your brand come about and how would you describe it? Alexandre and I knew we wanted to start a business together. We met during an academic competition in entrepreneurship so it was just the next logical step! At the time, we did not know in which field, but after listening to the documentary “Before the Flood” by Leornardo Di Caprio, everything was much clearer. After listening, we found out what our raison d’être was, our ultimate goal: to set up a company that could improve tomorrow’s world in a tangible way.
It took a lot of time and travel to make Solios the company it is today. From our stay in Nicaragua to meet our entrepreneur friend to inspire us, to our illumination of creating a solar watch in the middle of Greece, we were finally able to determine how we would shape the world in our image.
It was two years later that Solios really came into being. In the heart of the Rialto Theatre in Montreal, more than 600 people attended our official launch event. That night, we unveiled to the public our first prototype solar watch – the most elegant one on the market so far. The response from the audience stuns all the stress we’ve had so far: in 30 minutes, we’ve managed to reach our $25,000 socio-funding target.
That night, we left with $70,000 in pre-orders. Our dream officially became a reality. Our bosses were in the room at the launch. They both came to congratulate us … and told us, that’s it? That’s it.
What is your creative process? Our goal was very clear when launching Solios; creating the most elegant solar watch. We wanted to demonstrate that style and eco-responsibility could coexist without having to sacrifice at any level, including price. However, this mandate was more difficult than expected and took us several years. We first designed an elegant and minimalist watch and then carried out the development to include solartechnology, without damaging the aesthetics of the watch. Today we are very proud of the result!
What has inspired your new collection? In terms of design, certainly the minimalist design of Scandinavia. In terms of technology, we absolutely wanted to eliminate the need for battery replacement in a watch. A battery lasts on average 2 years and no one takes the time to change the battery. A battery that dies therefore corresponds to the first reason that pushes the overconsumption of watch. What inspired us at this level is the rise of renewable energies, in our case, solar. Elon Musk is one of the pioneers, mainly following the purchase of Solar City and at that time I was reading his biography. So we’re working with a Japanese player for our movement and our solar technology.
What are your influences? In terms of brands, we observe a lot Allbirds, KOTN, Patagonia and Tesla.
What is your signature piece? Our 3 best sellers are the Gamma with the Rose-Gold bracelet, the Nova with the silver bracelet and the Nebula with the black metal bracelet. The first two are the best sellers amongst women and the last for men. Apart from that, the model we’re most proud of is certainly our new model, the collaborative Make-A-Wish model. First of all because we had received a lot of requests for a blue dial, but especially because I consider it our most beautiful watch and it comes with our greatest impact.
Also, on all our models, we restore 1 acre of rainforest thanks to our partnership with Rainforest Trust. With the Make-A-Wish, an extra 50$ donation is offered
Who are the woman and man who best represents your brand? That would be Emma Watson and Leornardo DiCaprio, largely because of the documentary that shaped Alex and I so much.
What is your fondest fashion memory? My first Timex watch. I remember when I was young when I used to turn on the indigo light in my bed, before I even had computers and cellphones at home! On another note more related to Solios, our first visit to Japan and Hong Kong where we acted for the first time as a buyer for our own company when we knew absolutely nothing about the field was an adventure that I will remember very well all my life!
How are you coping with COVID? It’s a huge challenge that made us completely change our game plan. We canceled our trips to Toronto, Vancouver, France and Switzerland, when we had planned to participate in events and pop-up shops to make ourselves known. So this forced us to roll up our sleeves in order to accelerate the move towards digital. Fortunately for us, the efforts paid off. We have managed to double sales compared to last year, in addition to growing the team. Our international sales are constantly growing and now represent half of our sales. The whole thing is not done as we have production and delivery challenges, but at least the boat seems to be going in the right direction.
On a different note… Which book is on your nightstand at the moment? “The Unbearable Lightness of Being” by Milan Kundera.
Which song are you listening to over and over? “Double Trouble” by Eric Clapton.
Which television series are you binge watching? “Peaky Blinders” and “Planet Earth 2”.
What is your favorite recipe of the moment? Homemade ravioli with cheese and marinara sauce.
Which movie inspires you? “Interstellar” by Christopher Nolan is simply my favorite movie.
