Huge UFO Stopped a US Nuclear Submarine: The USS Memphis Incident
This account, first brought to light by ufologist Frank Joseph and detailed in his 2018 book, Military Encounters with Extraterrestrials: The Real War of the Worlds, originated from an unnamed witness. The incident reportedly took place on the night of October 24-25, 1989.
The USS Memphis, a Los Angeles-class nuclear attack submarine, was submerged at a depth of 150 meters (approximately 492 feet), about 150 miles off the coast of Florida. While the exact nature of their mission wasn’t specified, it was described simply as a “training mission.”
Suddenly, the situation took a dramatic and unsettling turn. The crew immediately recognized the gravity and unusual nature of what was unfolding. The submarine effectively lost control, and all communication systems went dead.
When the captain issued an order to stop, the nuclear reactor itself began to malfunction. An urgent decision was made to surface, and fortunately, this crucial control function still worked.
The eyewitness, who later shared his story with the ufologist, rushed to his observation post to survey the exterior. He was reportedly stunned by what he saw: the night sky above the submarine was glowing brightly, “like a neon-red night sign.” Simultaneously, heavy rain was falling.
Moments later, the witness observed a massive, boomerang-shaped or “V”-shaped object in the sky, moving to the left of the submarine. Using a laser rangefinder, the object was determined to be approximately 200 meters (about 656 feet) away and at least half a mile long (roughly 800 meters, or 2,625 feet).
The UFO didn’t just move; it began to slowly circle directly around the submarine, almost as if deliberately observing it. At this point, all the onboard electronics reportedly went haywire, rendering them inoperable.
The eyewitness observed a huge red reflection circling synchronously from the UFO on the water. He immediately reported the unidentified aircraft to the first officer, who instructed him to maintain his post and continue observation. The captain was then informed of the extraordinary events.
Then, the UFO abruptly stopped, and the entire sky around it intensified to an even deeper red. It then shot forward with such incredible speed that it vanished into the distance in an instant.
As soon as the UFO disappeared, the submarine’s electronics returned to normal, and the reactor began functioning properly again. The only irreversible damage sustained was to the communication system.
As the submarine continued its course, the eyewitness, the first mate, and two other officers were summoned to the wardroom. They were informed that they were the sole direct witnesses to the incident and were therefore forbidden from discussing it with anyone. Upon the USS Memphis’s arrival in port, all the witnesses were immediately taken off the submarine and placed in a single room under “observation.”
Three hours later, a U.S. Navy officer arrived and informed them that what they had actually seen was an “exploding weather satellite” and nothing more. Following this explanation, everyone was finally released.
However, the matter didn’t end there. Over the next few years, almost the entire crew of the Memphis was reportedly dispersed for unknown reasons and reassigned to other submarines. Not a single sailor was ever given a reason for their transfer, which, according to the eyewitness, is an extremely rare and unusual violation of standard Navy procedure.
Furthermore, it was discovered that all the main records of this specific voyage of the USS Memphis had been thoroughly purged. Only vague entries remained, indicating it was “on a voyage with other ships,” and all events of October 24 and 25 were completely removed from other records.
While the USS Memphis incident remains largely in the realm of anecdotal evidence and ufology, the year 1989 was a significant one for reported UFO sightings globally, including numerous mass sightings in Belgium that involved large, silent, triangular objects, echoing the description in this account.
These Belgian UFO “waves” prompted an official investigation by the Belgian Air Force, marking a rare instance of a military force publicly acknowledging and investigating such phenomena.
