Whatever else you think of him, Scott Pelley has a perfect affect and voice for TV. His address at Wake Forest, though, was painfully overwrought and self-involved. I don’t begrudge him his views on Trump — everyone has opinions. But he’s a mainstay of our most prestige legacy news show that has always maintained a pretense of objectivity. What Pelley revealed at Wake Forest — which, of course, anyone with any discernment already knew — is that he has passionate, conventionally liberal opinions on the Trump administration. Again, that’s fine. But will he and his colleagues now openly admit that 60 Minutes is an opinion show in the format of a news show? Pelley’s deep commitment to telling the truth would seem to admit of no other option.
