Why was the anti-Vietnam movement so large?
This is something that astonishes me. There was always pro-war faction and anti-war factions, sure, but the anti-war sentiment to Vietnam was something a little too damaging.
Look at the thrill and enthusiasm the American people had when they raised an army against Spain and made themselves masters of the Caribbean. Look at how eager young men were when they volunteered to fight against Santa Anna's forces in Mexico. Riding on horseback in unknown desert.
And let's not forget all of America's sons and daughters, of all descents; Irish, Italian, African, English, Mexican, Catholic, Jewish, Protestant, etc... all taking up arms and marching to defeat Hitler and Hirohito.
How can the same people who committed these heroic deeds become apathetic against fighting a nation succumbing to communism? The protests in California and various parts of the country did not help the war front at all. They only made the nation lose morale.
Where did that spirit of adventure go? That same energy which drove young men into battle and women into helping their husbands and brothers?
