In an “exclusive” datelined Dubai, Reuters reports:
Iran is poised to reject a U.S. proposal to end a decades-old nuclear dispute, an Iranian diplomat said on Monday, dismissing it as a “non-starter” that fails to address Tehran’s interests or soften Washington’s stance on uranium enrichment.
“Iran is drafting a negative response to the U.S. proposal, which could be interpreted as a rejection of the U.S. offer,” the senior diplomat, who is close to Iran’s negotiating team, told Reuters.
A negative response that “could be interpreted” as a rejection is designed to keep the discussions going. From the Iranian regime’s perspective, that’s the next best thing to a phony baloney deal itself.
In response to Barak Ravid’s detailed Axios report that a pending administration proposal would allow Iran limited low-level uranium enrichment “for civilian purposes,” President Trump issued a statement of his own (below). Left hanging (as Ravid subsequently noted) is the question whether Iran’s enrichment capacity would remain intact.
