California Republicans still love Donald Trump

Less than half of Republicans in the state strongly approve of the president.

SACRAMENTO, California — Republicans in California are steadfast in their support of President Donald Trump, even as he remains deeply unpopular in the blue state, a new poll from the University of California, Irvine found.

About 80 percent of California Republicans said they either strongly or somewhat approve of the president, including 55 percent who said they strongly approve, according to the UCI-OC Poll, which was conducted in partnership with Truedot.

A large majority of Democrats, 84 percent, and 45 percent of independents strongly disapprove of Trump, the poll showed. About 68 percent of independents polled either somewhat or strongly disapprove of the president, compared to 31 who approve of him.

Overall, 63 percent of Californians disapprove of Trump, with half strongly disapproving, compared to the roughly one-third who approve. The president’s overall ratings remained virtually unchanged since a survey in early June, before Trump’s unilateral decision to deploy the National Guard in Los Angeles amid protests over immigration raids.

The poll found that majorities of men and women surveyed in early June, and two-thirds of Black, Latino and Asian respondents, disapproved of the president. Trump’s support in California was highest among white respondents and men, at 41 percent and 39 percent respectively.

There were three polls administered by UC Irvine’s School of Social Ecology. The first, which was conducted from May 27 to June 2, surveyed 2,143 adults in California and had a margin of error of 2.9 percent. The second surveyed 2,000 adults from May 29 to June 4 and had a margin of error of 3.6 percent. A third poll conducted from June 24 to June 26 among 509 adults in California had a margin of error of 4.5 percent.
