Chiba man, 92, admits to strangling wife with cord before suicide attempt

CHIBA (TR) – Chiba Prefectural Police have arrested a 92-year-old man over the alleged strangling of his wife at their home earlier this year. He also attempted to take his life, reports the Asahi Shimbun (Aug. 12).
On March 4, Hachiro Nomura allegedly used an electrical cord to strangle his wife, 91-year-old Namiko, inside a bedroom on the second floor of their home in the town of Ichinomiya.
Upon his arrest this week, Nomura explained that the couple had attempted to commit suicide together. In addition to strangling his wife, he lit charcoal briquettes inside the room to take his life.
“I wanted to put my wife, who was suffering, out of her misery as quickly as possible, so I strangled her with an electrical cord,” he said.
The same day, a relative of couple alerted police. “I couldn’t get in touch with my grandparents, so I came to check on them,” the caller said. “I’d like a police officer to help me check.”
Officers arriving at the scene found Nomura and Namiko lying face-up on beds in the room. Namiko was later confirmed dead at the hospital. The cause of death was asphyxiation due to compression of the neck, the Mobara Police Station said.
Nomura was also transported to the hospital unconscious after being discovered. Police waited for his recovery before questioning him and making the arrest.
