Parliament set to reelect Takaichi as prime minister

Sanae Takaichi is set to be reelected as prime minister Wednesday in parliament, where the ruling bloc has a supermajority in the Lower House.
The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and its junior coalition partner, the Japan Innovation Party (JIP), hold 352 seats — more than three-quarters of the 465-seat chamber — as a result of the Feb. 8 election. The JIP is also known as Nippon Ishin no Kai.
In the Upper House, the LDP-JIP coalition holds 120 seats out of the 248 available, five short of a majority. While Takaichi is unlikely to be reelected in the first round of voting, the ruling coalition is positioned to elect her in a runoff.
