United States Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and former aide Jared Kushner are reportedly set to travel to Pakistan to resume talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to negotiate a permanent end to the nearly two-month conflict.
U.S. officials told Reuters and Axios on Friday about the upcoming meeting, speaking anonymously. On Tuesday, President Trump extended the two-week ceasefire with Iran to continue to negotiate a new deal, though progress has not been made thus far.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, on her last day of work before her maternity leave, confirmed the reported meeting.
“I can confirm special envoy Witkoff and Jared Kushner will be off to Pakistan again tomorrow morning to engage in talks, direct talks — intermediated by the Pakistanis, who have been incredible friends and mediators throughout this entire process — with representatives from the Iranian delegation,” she told Fox News on Friday.
She explained that Tehran reached out to the Trump administration, “as the president called on them to do,” and requested an in-person conversation.
“A trilateral meeting with the U.S. will be assessed after our meeting with Araghchi,” a Pakistani official told Axios.
Araghchi is expected to arrive in Islamabad, Pakistan’s capital city, on Friday night to hold discussions with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Field Marshal Asim Munir.
Sharif has played an instrumental role in the indefinite ceasefire between the United States and Iran for weeks. Earlier in April, he formally mediated indirect discussions in Islamabad involving Vice President JD Vance, as well as Witkoff and Kushner. Vance is not expected to participate in the upcoming negotiations, however.
“The vice president remains deeply involved in this entire process, and he’ll be standing by here in the United States, along with the president and the Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and the entire national security team for updates,” Leavitt said.
