Federal authorities raided the Portsmouth, Virginia, district office of Democrat State Sen. L. Louise Lucas on Wednesday as part of an ongoing federal corruption investigation. The probe centers on allegations involving bribery and possible illegal marijuana-related activities tied to a cannabis business.
Lucas, a longtime figure in Virginia politics and Senate President Pro Tempore who played a prominent role in the state’s recent congressional redistricting efforts, had her office and a nearby cannabis dispensary she co-owns searched under court-authorized warrants.
Agents, including SWAT-style teams with an armored vehicle, were seen at both the legislative office and The Cannabis Outlet.
Video footage from the scene, including coverage by Fox News, showed federal agents actively carrying out the raids. According to reports, Lucas was not arrested and she returned home later in the day. No charges have been filed at this time.
In a release, the FBI stated that it was “executing a court-authorized federal search warrant in Portsmouth,” without going into further detail about the probe target. The shop fell under intense regulatory scrutiny following an investigation that revealed several products exceeded legal THC thresholds.
Beyond her involvement in the cannabis industry, she has also served as a pivotal figure in the high-stakes legal and political battle over Virginia’s congressional redistricting.
“You can bet your a** that Democrats are ready for this fight,” asserted Lucas, adding that Democrats will “fight fire with fire” during the redistricting fight.
In April, Virginia voters approved a statewide referendum to proceed with the redistricting process by a margin of over 100,000 votes. However, ongoing legal challenges surrounding the new maps have delayed their implementation. Despite the clear mandate from the electorate to move forward with the redraw, the maps remain stalled in the courts, preventing them from taking effect as scheduled.
“Rumors of corruption and pay-to-play politics have long surrounded the Democratic Party’s infrastructure in Virginia. However, no one has been willing to do anything to hold these power brokers accountable,” said Virginia state Delegate Wren Williams, GOP opponent of the Spanberger-backed redistricting plan.
“Everyone is innocent until proven guilty, but it takes a federal judge to issue search warrants to the FBI. When the chief of police and prosecutor tried to hold Senator Lucas accountable for her actions last time, each were removed from office shortly thereafter. Sunlight is the best cure for corruption. I’m sure the Commonwealth of Virginia will be very interested to see what comes of this investigation,” he continued.
