Anti-ICE agitator charged with reportedly biting officers during Delaney Hall clashes

An anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agitator faces federal charges after allegedly biting federal law enforcement officers during the clashes at Delaney Hall in Newark, New Jersey.
Brendan John Geier, 26, is accused of “kicking and biting” ICE officers outside the detention center, leaving horrific wounds, according to Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche.
“Peaceful protest doesn’t translate to violently attacking federal law enforcement officers. Federal officers are protecting United States’ property and facilities. With virtually no local law enforcement support from New Jersey, rioters are regrouping and attacking. We will not tolerate the vicious attacks we have seen in Newark the last few days, and we will make arrests and hold people accountable for criminal conduct,” said Blanche in a statement.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) suspects that Geier was part of a large group of demonstrators blocking a road leading to the Delaney Hall ICE detention center at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday.
The Delaney Hall clashes came after New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill (D-N.J.) ordered state police to establish a “protected protest zone” around the facility. However, protesters have continued to demonstrate outside of the facility.
According to the DOJ, the group Geier was with ignored ICE agents’ commands to move away and violently engaged with the officers.
“The deportation officers issued commands to the demonstrators to ‘move back,’ but the demonstrators, including Geier, ignored those commands and refused to clear the road. Geier instead engaged in a struggle with deportation officers, kicking officers and ultimately biting an officer’s forearm, and another’s knuckle. Both victims received treatment at a local hospital,” stated the DOJ.
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Markwayne Mullin took to X, describing Geier as a “violent agitator.”
“The Trump Administration will ALWAYS stand with our federal law enforcement officers. Anyone who assaults a law enforcement officer will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” said Mullin.
Acting Special Agent in Charge Spiros Karabinas of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Newark clarified in a statement, “To be clear, peaceful protest does not mean biting, kicking, or punching law enforcement officers.”
Geier made his initial court appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Cari Fais in Newark on Friday. He was released on location monitoring and a strict curfew, and he is legally barred from returning to the area around Delaney Hall while awaiting trial.
