The first annual baseball game between federal legislators took place in 1909. There were gaps during the Great Depression, World War II and in the late 1950-s when House Speaker Sam Rayburn, a Democrat, felt the rivalries were too heated between the two parties.
The summertime tradition supports charities in the D.C. area and provides scholarships for children.
Republicans won by 13-12 in 2021, 10-0 in 2022, 16-6 in 2023, 31-11 in 2024 and 13-2 in 2025. The annual sporting event was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, meaning the Democrat team’s last win was 14-7 in 2019.
This game is especially important for Democrats, as former professional baseball player and World Series champion Mark Teixeira is on the November ballot as the Republican nominee for Texas’ 21st Congressional District. Teixeira, 46, played for the Texas Rangers, Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Angels and New York Yankees.
“I’m excited about knocking off the rust — then beating the Democrats on and off the field,” Teixeira said about next year’s game, should he win in November.
