Vice President JD Vance and his family have installed a custom-made-in-America, chicken coop at the historic Naval Observatory, the official residence of the vice president.
The coop was designed by Carolina Coops, an American, family-operated small business that has handcrafted chicken coops in the U.S. over the past 18 years. Founders Matt and Gnon DuBoise considered the Naval Observatory project a major milestone in their career.
“Seeing our work become part of a historic residence like the Naval Observatory is a milestone I will never forget. “As a small business owner, this is a true ‘American dream’ moment for me and my family,” Matt DuBoise.
“I am deeply grateful for the opportunity and excited to continue sharing the benefits and joy of raising chickens with people around the country, as well as how having a chicken coop can benefit families and teach kids valuable life lessons. This project is more than just a chicken coop — it reflects the dedication of our entire team and the values that have guided us from the beginning,” he added.
The new addition made its debut at the annual “Camp VPR,” an event for local 4-H students with ties with the USDA, mirroring a cultural shift toward sustainable living.
A spokesperson for the vice president stated that Vance will personally care for the chickens at his home, and revealed that his children have already named the newly arrived chicks.
Vance has previously joked about his children’s appetite for eggs. While campaigning in 2024, the vice president quipped that his two young sons “eat about 14 eggs every single morning” as he discussed rising egg prices.
Several vice presidents have left similar marks in the past on the Naval Observatory property in the past. Joe Biden added a heritage garden, Karen Pence, wife of Mike Pence, added beehives and Kamala Harris upgraded the residence’s library.
The Vances’ chicken coop comes just months after Melania Trump unveiled a White House beehive designed to resemble a miniature version of the executive mansion.
