The Republican National Committee (RNC) is planning to hold its first-ever midterm convention to boost support for the crucial elections. Despite not being on the ballot this cycle, President Donald Trump will reportedly be the main focus of the convention.
RNC Chairman State Senator Joe Gruters (R-Fla.) told the Washington Examiner that the “upcoming Midterm Convention will be a Trump-a-palooza that will showcase the strength of the Republican Party and the candidates carrying President Trump’s America First agenda forward.”
He added that the main goal would be to “highlight the good President Trump has done, unite Republicans around our shared vision, and build momentum for midterm victories.”
While a location has not yet been announced for the RNC event, Texas has emerged as the leading contender after national committee representatives recently scouted the American Airlines Center in Dallas. According to reports, RNC officials are also evaluating key battleground states such as Michigan, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Iowa as hosts.
Gruters highlighted the fact that Democrats forwent the idea of a midterm convention due to a lack of party funds, opting instead to redirect those resources directly to in-state campaign operations. However, the party is facing a fundraising problem, with the RNC holding a massive $100 million cash edge over the Democrats.
“Meanwhile, the debt-ridden and radical Democrats are consumed by Trump Derangement Syndrome and too broke to host a convention of their own,” Gruters continued.
Ken Martin, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) chairman, had reportedly floated the idea of holding a gathering earlier in the cycle, but the plan was quietly scrapped as internal concerns grew over the committee’s lingering multi-million dollar debts.
Stakes are high for November’s elections as Republicans strive to maintain their narrow majorities in both congressional chambers and win additional seats. Democrats are taking an aggressive approach as they seek to retake control of Congress.
