Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate, has announced that a first-of-its-kind midterm election convention will be held by the Republican National Committee (RNC) in Dallas in September.
While the Republican National Committee (RNC) has been tight-lipped about the official confirmation, RNC staff have reportedly toured the American Airlines Center in Dallas, and the venue has had its schedule held for the first two weeks of September, according to Texas outlet KERA News.
“I know that we are having the midterm convention in Dallas in September,” Paxton said during a tele-town hall on Monday, according to CNN. “I know that we anticipate [President Donald Trump] coming to that and speaking.”
President Donald Trump has long championed a midterm convention to rally GOP base voters — a strategic move to counter the typical poll drops that plague whichever party is in power before midterm elections.
“The Republicans are going to do a Midterm Convention in order to show the great things we have done since the Presidential Election of 2024. Time and place to be determined. Stay tuned, it will be quite the Event, and very exciting!” he said on social media in September.
In March, RNC Chairman Joe Gruters, who has playfully described the upcoming event as a sort of “Trump-a-palooza,” confirmed that the convention would take place before the November 3rd general election.
“There’s a very short window of doing it after the last primary ballots have been cast and before the general election. But yes, we’re very much moving forward with it,” he told NewsNation.
The committee has yet to officially announce the convention or its date and location, though a source familiar with the event told Bloomberg that it would take place on September 9th and 10th. Notably, not only would this land just before the anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terror attacks, but it would also be on the one-year anniversary of the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.
By keeping control of both the House and Senate, Republicans hope to lock in their majorities and clear the path for the president’s final two-year legislative agenda.
