Amid conflicting rumors and speculation regarding 84-year-old Senator Mitch McConnell’s health, Kentucky Democrat Governor Andy Beshear is now demanding answers.
On Wednesday, Beshear (D-Ky.) sent a letter to McConnell’s office in a Senate office building.
“Over the last several weeks, Kentuckians have grown increasingly concerned about the current state of your health and wellbeing, and ability to hold office in the United States Senate,” wrote Beshear.
Requesting an update on his current status, he added, “As public officeholders, we hyave made a commitment to our constituents to do our best to represent them and to always be transparent. I believe this requires clear communication about one’s ability to serve … We wish you a safe and speedy recovery,” the letter concluded.
His office also released a public statement, citing “growing concerns around the Senator’s ability to serve.”
“As Governor – and a fellow public official who understands the commitment we’ve made to the people we serve – I am requesting the Senator provide an update on his current health status,” said Beshear. “Allowing speculation to continue in the media is not fair to the Senator or to Kentuckians, and my hope is that this provides him the opportunity to share the information in a transparent manner, direct from the source. I wish him a safe and speedy recovery.”
Senator Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) was hospitalized in mid-June, but his office has released very little information since. Citing this total lack of transparency, Governor Andy Beshear’s office called out the silence, arguing that the secrecy has left Kentuckians completely in the dark regarding the true nature and severity of the senator’s medical condition.
McConnell has had a handful of health scares in recent years, including falls and previous hospitalizations. He announced last year that he would not seek reelection after the end of his current term in January 2027.
Kentucky law requires that a special election be held to fill McConnell’s seat, should he be forced to leave office by August 3rd. The law was vetoed by Beshear but overruled by the Republican-majority Kentucky legislature.
Some high-profile Republicans have reported having spoken to McConnell since his apparent hospitalization last month, including Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.).
“Senator McConnell appreciates the outpouring of support he’s receiving while he continues his recovery in the hospital,” a spokesperson for McConnell’s office had said in a July 2nd statement.
